The Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is a web-based computerized data collection system designed to capture client-level information over time on the characteristics and service needs of men, women, and children experiencing homelessness.

The Calgary HMIS seeks to collect information from all homeless service agencies throughout Calgary. These include government funded emergency shelters, and CHF funded short-term and permanent housing programs, homeless outreach, prevention and diversion programs, and other service programs in contact with people experiencing homelessness.

In order to gain a comprehensive picture of homelessness as possible, other agencies are strongly encouraged to use HMIS as well. These include non-CHF funded agencies that provide housing services (transitional housing, supportive housing, youth shelters, for instance), as well as auxiliary services (such as food banks, income support services and outreach programs). Increased participation in HMIS will increase our understanding of clients’ characteristics and needs, help us to better evaluate programs, and strengthen our efforts to end homelessness.

HMIS improves client care by assisting in the initiation and tracking of referrals, accelerated intake, and reducing the client’s burden of continually retelling their story. HMIS is a customizable, user friendly system. Using HMIS allows agencies to standardize data collection which enables our community to capture relevant data and make informed program and policy decisions based on quantitative and qualitative data.

The Calgary Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is a cloud based, electronic Client management information system providing a standardized assessment of Client needs, individualized serve plans and service records.  The Calgary community utilizes the HMIS to understand the nature of homelessness, develop policies and initiatives to address homelessness, and coordinate case management services.

The Calgary HMIS is a product of WellSky Community Services and is managed by the Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF).
